London based Vibes player at Bocabar Glastonbury on Friday 7th October

Martin Pyne
Friday 7th October
Bocabar Glastonbury

Martin will be performing with the Bocabar 'house' trio. The evening will include choice standards and some original material. Martin was so good we have invited him back for more - see review below

REVIEW of Martin's gig last January at Bocabar
The Jazz Sessions at Bocabar Glastonbury made a swinging return for 2016 with London based vibraphone player Martin Pyne. It was clear right from the opening number that the crowd were in for a night of passionate and engaging music. (Not to mention the food, which is always top notch)

Martin performed a mix of jazz standards and his own jazz compositions with the Bocabar ‘house’ trio of Adrian Smith on double bass, Trevor Davis on drums and Hywel Davis on piano. The set included a wide range material from blues and bebop to ballads and bossa nova. Each song took a different feel and style from upbeat numbers to cool and moody. The vibraphone is such an amazing instrument who’s sound seems to wrap you up like a warm cosy blanket for your ears.

‘Cuban Freddie,’ a Cuban re-imagining of Miles Davis’ classic blues Freddie Freelaoder,’ featured some great rhythmic interplay between Trevor on drums and Martin on percussion. Reggae influences could be heard in the upbeat version of Thelonius Monks’ blues ‘Hackensack’ You could tell that the four musicians on stage were enjoying themselves as much as those listening as they wove through the varied set giving each song a sense of intimacy and purpose. If this session is anything to go by then the rest of the year at the Bocabar is something to look forward to. The venue seems to have been built for jazz. You get the feeling that you in a top London jazz club, only better. Plus it is only down the road!

“Really LOVELY jazz evening last night. The best yet! Loved the way Martin Pyne had the audience listening from the word go. He had such a sensitive quiet sound but with unbelievable dexterity and finesse. Lovely communication too, drawing us all in to listen…….so glad to have been there” – Helen Lunt (Street)

“An impressive and sensitive performance in an intimate venue. It was a real treat to see and hear musicians of this standard right on my doorstep.”– Gary Amos (Wookey Hole)

Martin Pyne is a composer and improviser whose music draws on a wide range of influences including free improv, Americana, electronica and classical. His music has been featured on BBC 6 Music "The Freak Zone", and on BBC Radio 3 Late Junction and on Resonance FM.
Album Reviews
"Busnoys San Angelo offers an intelligent, imaginative combination of vibes, bass guitar and drums. At times recalling Gary Burton's sixties group with Steve Swallow, this is a genuinely contemporary record that should appeal to new as well as established jazz fans" - JAZZ UK MAGAZINE

The 'A List' of the Bristol jazz scene and some of the best jazz players in the UK. Bristol based trumpeter Andy Hague has been leading his quintet for over twenty years, and it is one of the most popular bands in the area.

Jazz on Friday 4th March in Glastonbury

Jazz Songstress at Bocabar

This month’s jazz session will take you on a journey through some of the songs that have made jazz history. Classic showstoppers from stage and screen plus choice numbers from the ‘Great American Songbook,’ this evening is not to be missed if you love your jazz.

Jo Secombe is a an exceptionally talented vocalist who’s style reflects her love for songs from the 40s swing band era, stage musicals, gospel and soul music. She loves to sing those rare, often lest out, verses and chooses songs that each tell it’s own story. Tonight’s song selection will include Cab Calloway, Rogers and Hart, Blossom Dearie and Hoagy Carmichael.

Jo is always in high demand so this is a rare opportunity to see and hear this charismatic jazz vocalist in an intimate jazz club setting. Tonight she will be performing with the wonderful Bocabar ‘house’ trio of Hywel Davis – piano, Adrian Smith – double bass and Trevor Davis – drums. We are also excited to announce that, due to popular demand, Canadian sax player Terry Quinney will also be joining us as on the night.

Jazz Double Bill at Bocabar - Friday 5th Feb

The monthly jazz sessions at the Bocabar in Glastonbury has established itself as the place to be for great food and live jazz. This month we have a double bill featuring the cool music of Blue Note Records and the sound of swinging guitars.

The Sound of Blue Note is a quintet hailing from Wiltshire who have been making their presence felt in the jazz scene all over the country. Their impressive live shows and authentic style has gained them many accolades from the jazz establishment.
‘The Sound Of Blue Note takes its lead from the greatest jazz recordings on the iconic jazz label. However, this is no slavish copy. The band perform gems from a treasure trove of originals from the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan and others but retains an identity, impressively, of its own. Slick ensemble passages alternate with inspired solos to bring this exceptional material very much to life! This may be a celebration of a golden musical age but in a modern and very relevant context.' -Alan Barnes

'I'm always pleased to get a call to play with the Sound of Blue Note. The guys play with energy & commitment & the audiences always seem to love the music!' - Mark Nightingale

We are also featuring the Madelin Veale trio as the support act on the night. Richard Madelin and Terry Veale are two of the best exponents of jazz guitar in the Sound West taking their influence from the legendary Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall. Playing numbers from the Great American Songbook, expect strong melodies, rich harmonies and plenty of swing.

To book in advance please call 01458 440558 or email bocabarglastonbury@btconnect.com Entry is £5 per person or £12 per person to book a table with Mezze platter.
