Brexit Busting Jazz on 8th September in Glastonbury

This month we have invited the Bristol European Jazz Ensemble to play at the Bocabar jazz session on Friday 8th September. The group are an eclectic mix of musicians from across Europe, now based in Bristol, who have come together as a quintet to play original compositions and jazz standards. Led by trumpet player David Mowat expect all things from bossa to be-bop, ballads to intense improvisations, they play something for everyone. With band members whose roots lie in Italy, France, Switzerland and Denmark as well as the UK the Bristol European Jazz Ensemble are a fine representation of the melting pot that is the contemporary music world. This is sure to be another night of great music at one of the South West's best jazz clubs.
 

The support act starts at 7.30 with the wonderful jazz singer Sarah Griffiths and her trio. Sarah sings all the jazz standards you know and love making this a great start to the evening. Fronted by vocalist Holly Wellington and trumpeter Alfie Grieve, it features the very best of Bristol's blossoming young music scene as they combine a love of jazz, soul, Afrobeat, hip hop and R&B to concoct bewitching tunes with complex rhythmic counterpoint and irresistibly groovy harmonic lines.

Duncan Anselm Quartet

An exciting night of swing, blues and bebop. The Duncan Anselm Quartet Plays straight-ahead jazz - 1950s/60s style and beyond - whether it's hard bop from fantastic Blue Note artists such as Sonny Clark and Hank Mobley, standards from the great American songbook carefully chosen to fit with the sound of the band, or Duncan's original compositions. The aim is always to present well-arranged highly accessible material with good grooves and lively soloing.

Duncan Anselm was a prominent player on the Bristol scene through the late eighties and early nineties, both with his own band and as an original member of Mingus Fingers. Having moved away from the area for 20 years, he is now living just down the road, a stone's throw from the Glastonbury Festival site. This new quartet heralds an exciting return to the scene for this accomplished musician and composer.

The Jazz Defenders

The Jazz Defenders are a group born out of a deep love for Blue Note Records – specifically the hard bop recordings of Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan and Art Blakey. Catchy horn lines and incredible musicianship combined with Rudy Van Gelder’s engineering skills mean they will forever be regarded as classics of the genre. The Jazz Defenders are a group that would ‘defend’ the legacy of those recordings whilst creating its own original identity and distinctive flair.

Featuring some of Bristol’s finest players the line-up is Nick Dover (tenor saxophone), Nick Malcolm (trumpet), Matt Brown (drums), Will Harris (bass), and George Cooper (piano). The music that they produce together is a modern Soul Jazz slant on classic Hard Bop, effortlessly channeling the spirit of the golden Blue Note era of Jazz.

As session musicians in their own right, the five members of the band have worked with a variety of internationally acclaimed artists such as Nigel Kennedy, Massive Attack, Pee Wee Ellis, Andy Sheppard, Get The Blessing, Simon Spillet, Alan Barnes, Rodriguez & Nostalgia 77, as well as playing at venues including Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Cafe & The 606 Club.

Honey-toned saxophonist Andy Tweed has picked his favourite players to join him in his new project, Mint Jam. You can look forward to an evening of soul jazz, classic grooves and tunes by the likes of Stanley Turrentine and John Scofield as we and originals by Andy himself. 

 

We will also be treated to the gorgeous voice of local jazz singer Sarah Griffiths.

REVIEW of Martin's gig last January at Bocabar

The Jazz Sessions at Bocabar Glastonbury made a swinging return for 2016 with London based vibraphone player Martin Pyne. It was clear right from the opening number that the crowd were in for a night of passionate and engaging music. (Not to mention the food, which is always top notch)

Martin performed a mix of jazz standards and his own jazz compositions with the Bocabar ‘house’ trio of Adrian Smith on double bass, Trevor Davis on drums and Hywel Davis on piano. The set included a wide range material from blues and bebop to ballads and bossa nova. Each song took a different feel and style from upbeat numbers to cool and moody. The vibraphone is such an amazing instrument who’s sound seems to wrap you up like a warm cosy blanket for your ears. 

‘Cuban Freddie,’ a Cuban re-imagining of Miles Davis’ classic blues Freddie Freelaoder,’ featured some great rhythmic interplay between Trevor on drums and Martin on percussion. Reggae influences could be heard in the upbeat version of Thelonius Monks’ blues ‘Hackensack’ You could tell that the four musicians on stage were enjoying themselves as much as those listening as they wove through the varied set giving each song a sense of intimacy and purpose. If this session is anything to go by then the rest of the year at the Bocabar is something to look forward to. The venue seems to have been built for jazz. You get the feeling that you in a top London jazz club, only better. Plus it is only down the road!

Martin Pyne is a composer and improviser whose music draws on a wide range of influences including free improv, Americana, electronica and classical. His music has been featured on BBC 6 Music "The Freak Zone", and on BBC Radio 3 Late Junction and on Resonance FM.

A fresh new collaboration between Israeli UK-resident drummer/composer, Asaf Sirkis, and Polish vocalist/composer, Sylwia Bialas, and featuring Frank Harrison on piano and keyboards and Scottish bassist, Kevin Glasgow. Expect an evening of soulful melodies covering a wide range of influences including contemporary classical music, Polish folk, and South Indian and Middle Eastern music. £5 (gig only) and £14 (gig and mezze)

 

Friday 2nd September: Andy Sheppard's Pushy Doctors. A great ‘anarchistic’ ride through standards of jazz pop and beyond by this hard swinging ‘out there’ classic organ trio. Formed to play in the deep club/bar environment this disrespectful grooving band can really blow the roof off. Andy Sheppard (saxophones), Dan Moore (keys) & Tony Orrell (Drums).
